When Chen Xingyi first came, everyone wanted to meet him. He was the first Albino child to come to Bethel. Everyone marveled over his white-as-snow skin and his pale blue eyes. Some of the other children even thought he was European! He actually from the city of Hohhot in Mongolia. He was very shy at first, and didn’t talk very much. It wasn’t long, however, before he grew to love his aiyis! Now he enjoys being picked up and tickled, and talks to everyone. Xingyi’s eyes are extremely light sensitive, so he keeps them closed most of the time. However, if a room is dark, he can see quite well and is able to play and run around. He is very clever, and loves to be of assistance to his aiyi’s. He has a very expressive personality, and one of his favorite activities is to be chased. He enjoys playing with all toys, especially ones that are noisy or have lights on them. One of his favorite play activities is to show an adult a toy as if he is going to give it to them, and then to run and hide it in a room for them to find. Xingyi has sensitive skin and eyes, so we are very careful when he goes outside. He is always covered up and wears special glasses. Because he has limited vision, he often helps the aiyis by holding hands and guiding the other children whenever they go for walks. Since arriving, Xingyi has learned to feed himself, brush his teeth, get his own water, and to clean up his belongings. He can even put on his own clothes, though sometimes they end up being put on backwards! Xingyi is a very affectionate, playful child who loves to give people hugs. The staff at Bethel loves watching him learn and grow!
