Bethel lies on 17 acres of land. Some of this land is dedicated to become near self-sustainable. We
actually grow more than we can east so we can sell some of our products. Our gardens, green houses, fields are
maintained by about 10 people who are also local farmers. We grow vegetables and fruits in a “near organic”
fashion because we do not use chemicals.
We also raise chickens, which provide enough eggs for the kids and staff to consume, with leftovers to
sell. With the recent addition of rabbits, we have been able to raise and sell them for an additional source of
income.
Bethel places a high value on the environment. Solar panels have been installed on the main facility
building, along with the seven children’s houses. The panels provide hot water used for washing, cooking, and
cleaning. To provide heat, a biomass boiler is used. The boiler, a greener alternative, reduces exhaust fumes,
which translates into less polluting of the atmosphere. Bethel’s independent water source comes from the
drilling of two water wells on the site.
