Arts & Crafts: Pre-School

In this class, the preschool children (age 3 – 6) create a variety of crafts and have fun. They will build hand motor skills, sense different textures, and elevate their imagination. The materials used this summer include play dough, foam door hangers, buttons, and papers.

The students (age 7-19) create a variety of crafts and have fun. The main purpose to the crafts is to build hand motor skills and hand sensitivities to fine touch. The activities include paper
match, eye balls, tie dye shirts, decorating foam, door hangers and lots more.

Braille – Chinese Literature

The teaching materials are from 人民教育出版社小学语文 (Elementary Chinese, published by People’s Education Press) Braille edition, which cover vocabulary, character writing, sentence structure, and literature (http://www.pep.com.cn). In summer, the younger students study the first grade material and the older third. In addition, the students will improvise stories during the class and share with their classmates. In terms of writing, the students use Stylus for Chinese Braille assignments.

Braille – English

All the students continue to study Grade one English Braille with the course "Active American English," including reading and writing skills. The goal of this class is to build up their own English Braille vocabulary bank as well as their fingers’ sensitivity on touching English Braille.

Computer – lower and upper level

|
The younger students learn how to type in Chinese Characters and English words on the computer and the teenagers practice how to use emailing program "Outlook." The teenagers also learned how to use Network Places to move files from one computer to another one.

Culinary Skills – Pre-School

Once a week, 1 hour
|
Preschoolers learn how to put all the ingredients together according to some simple recipes. After cooking, the students will share the food with trained table manner. The purpose is to introduce basic cooking techniques such as mixing and baking and daily used ingredients, such as flours, baking soda, sugar, and oil. The products include Jello Jigglers and Banana Bread.

Culinary Skills – students

In this class, the students learn ingredients, cooking tools, recipes, cooking process and cleanup requirement. The students are directed to achieve the final product through individually assigned jobs and teamwork skills. Independency in the kitchen is expected. The recipes for this summer include cup cakes, chocolate chip cookies, fruit jellies and boiled chocolate oatmeal cookies.

English Corner

60 minutes per day, M, Tu, Thur, Fri.

Students practice their English in a relaxed setting with volunteers. Activities include story telling, games, and sharing personal interests such as knitting, jewelry making, and hair braiding while using English as their primary language.

English: Pre-School

30 minutes, daily, M – Thur.

3 – 6 year olds learn English alphabets and basic words in English such as Hello, Good morning, Goodbye, Thank you, Please, etc. They also sing simple English songs in class, such as Old MacDonald had a Farm, If You are Happy, and Mary has a Little Lamb. The purpose of this class is to introduce the children to the sounds and basic sentence structure of English, using a regular routine of games and songs.

In this class, students (age 7 – 19) learn sentence structures (noun, verb, and tense), new vocabulary, and conversational skills as well as structured classroom environment. Students learn how to express their feelings, talk about their day, and ask for directions politely. In addition, the students learn how to play the recorder
